What's the Buzz with Onomatamore?

Welcome to Onomatamore! (pronounced On - oh - mot - ah - mor - ay)

Each year 11 million elementary and junior high/middle school students participate in spelling bees in the United States. To prepare for their bees, most students are provided with lists of words to memorize. Many students find this activity tedious, not worthy of their commitment.

Onomatamore presents a better way to prepare for spelling bees. It’s interactive, it’s engaging, and it’s fun.

Onomatamore is based on four principles:

  • Words are easier to remember when you understand what they mean, how they came to be, and how they should be used.
  • Multimedia presentation is a more engaging way to learn and retain new words than simply reading text.
  • Spelling words gets easier the more times you must spell them.
  • Studying a small number of words daily over several months is more effective than thousands of words a few weeks before the bee competition.

Onomatamore contains all the words from the nearly 4,000 word list that is updated annually for students studying for their school, county, regional, and state bees. This list is furnished by the organization that operates the national spelling bee held in our nation’s capital each year in May.

These 4,000 words are divided between school bees and higher level bees and then by three levels of difficulty. Within each segment, words are bundled into modules, each with twenty words. With a study plan of one module per day (< 20 minutes) and three additional ones on the weekends, you can cover all the school bee words and most of the higher level bee words between October and January. (Most school bees are held in January)
