Welcome to Onomatamore

Welcome to Onomatamore, where we make Spelling Bee Preparation Fun. Onomatamore was developed by a family of spellers with experience at all levels of competition.

Onomatamore is based on four principles:

  • Words are easier to spell when you understand their meaning, origin, and usage.
  • Multimedia presentation is a more engaging way to learn new words than reading text
  • Spelling words gets easier the more times you need to spell them.
  • Studying a small number of words daily over several months is more effective than a large number a week or two before the bee competition.

Onomatamore contains all the words from the nearly 4,000 word list that is updated annually for students studying for their school, county, regional, and state bees. This list is furnished by the organization that operates the national spelling bee held in our nation’s capital each year in May.

These 4,000 words are divided between local bees and higher level bees, then by three levels of difficulty. Within each segment, words are bundled into modules, each with twenty words. With a study plan of one module per day and three additional ones on the weekends, you can cover the entire word list between September and January.

How it Works
To begin the Onomatamore learning process, select one word module.

On your screen, the first of twenty flashcards will load. As each card comes up, its word is audibly pronounced, multiple fields of information about the word are presented, and a photograph illustrating the word appears on the right.

After reviewing this screen, you can advance to the next word in the module by clicking Next or pressing Return on your keyboard.

When you have completed your review of all 20 words in the module, the Fill in the Blanks game will appear on your screen.

The definitions for the twenty words that you just reviewed are in the center. On the left side type are the missing letters for each word. On the far right, it will tell you if you have spelled each word correctly.

If you need help, you can click the Word Module tab to review the words again. You may not proceed to the Crossword puzzle until you have correctly spelled all twenty words

Once you have correctly completed the Crossword Puzzle, Test section for the first word will appear on your screen. As with the Word Study section, the first word will be audibly pronounced. Your task is to spell it correctly on the screen and then advance to the next word. As you hit the Enter key, you will be informed if your entry was correct or not.

What is Onomatamore?
Onomatamore is an online spelling bee preparation service.

Who are the intended users for the Onomatamore service?
This service is designed for students in grade 1-8 who are eligible to participate in their school spelling bee. However, anyone who is interested in improving their spelling and vocabulary may subscribe to this program.

What is the School Enrollment Program?
Onomatamore’s service is launching with the ’24-’25 school year. As such, we are offering the School Enrollment Program on an invitation-only basis to a limited number of schools, before offering it to a larger audience next year. Available at no charge to the students or their schools, the SEP provides a level playing field for all students to prepare for their school bees.

How can Onomatamore offer its service without charge to individual schools?
The SEP for ’24-’25 concludes on January 31, 2025. Prior to that date, students will be made aware of subscription opportunities that extend from February 1, 2025 to the beginning of the ’25-’26 school year, so they may continue their learning in the bee off-season. Students are under no obligation to make any purchase.

For anyone who is not registered with the SEP, the Onomatamore service is available for a monthly subscription. Parents can register their children through the Onomatamore website via credit card. Anyone with a credit card can subscribe to Onomatamore for one’s own use, as well.

If the SEP is offered at no charge, is anything else expected from the enrolled school?
For the SEP, the following is expected:

  • Provide a list of your ’24-’25 school year bee winners and links to any press coverage
  • Coordinate any technical issues encountered with the website with Onomatamore technical support
